Luke 1:1-4; John 1:1-18; 17:1-5

John 1:18 -> footnote a -> A couple of different scriptures. One say you must be quickened by the spirit in order to see God in the flesh. Another, D&C 84: 22, says you must have power and authority through the priesthood in order to behold the FACE of God. It makes me wonder if you can take that literally and infer that Joseph Smith didn't see the face of God, but just beheld their glory and that fact that the shapes and voices above him were of the personage type and the light was too blinding to actually see anything like a face clearly.
John 1:18 -> footnote c -> Another way of reconciling this verse: JST states that it hasn't ever or will never happen except the person shall bear record of it.

John 17:5 -> Clear statement of premortal life and how we're all different up there and were able to obtain different glories position and characteristics. Then by coming to this earth, even Jesus Christ had to give those up to a certain extent and grow from very humble means. Our souls are the same but our able to let them shine through increases and grows and strengthens by how we live and mature both physically and spiritually.
